How to Clean Air Conditioning Filters
Short answer: Turn the system off, slide out the filter, and check what type it is. Washable filters get rinsed with water, dried fully, and put back. Disposable pleated filters cannot be cleaned, so replace them. Never run the AC without a filter, and never put back a damp one.

Can you clean your AC filter, or do you replace it?
It depends on the filter. Most Tampa Bay homes use a disposable pleated filter made of paper and cardboard. Those are not made to be washed. Water ruins the media, and vacuuming does not pull out the fine dust that matters. Replace them.
A washable filter is usually a plastic or foam frame with a mesh screen. It will say washable or reusable on the frame. Those can be cleaned and reused.
| Filter type | Clean it? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Disposable pleated | No | Replace with the same size |
| Washable mesh or foam | Yes | Rinse, dry fully, reinstall |
| Media filter box cartridge | No | Replace the cartridge |
How do you clean a washable AC filter step by step?
- Turn the thermostat to off.
- Pull the filter out of the return grille or the air handler slot. Note the airflow arrow.
- Take it outside and tap off loose dust.
- Rinse with a garden hose from the clean side to the dirty side, so dust is pushed back out the way it came in.
- For greasy buildup, use mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse.
- Let it dry completely. In Florida humidity this can take several hours in shade.
- Slide it back in with the arrow pointing toward the air handler.
A damp filter in a humid attic or closet can grow mildew and push that smell through your vents. Waiting until it is bone dry matters.

How often should you check it in Tampa Bay?
Our AC runs most of the year, so filters load up faster than in cooler states. Look at yours about once a month. Hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, it is time to clean or replace it. Homes with pets, construction dust or lots of cooking tend to clog sooner.
What happens if the filter stays dirty?
Airflow drops. The system works harder, rooms cool unevenly, and the evaporator coil can ice up or the drain line can clog with grime. A frozen coil and a water leak at the air handler are common calls in summer. Yearly maintenance helps equipment last longer, and the ENERGY STAR maintenance checklist lists filter care as the first step: ENERGY STAR maintenance checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I vacuum a disposable filter instead?
It is not a good idea. Vacuuming removes surface dust but leaves the fine particles trapped deep in the fibers, and it can tear the media. A torn or clogged filter hurts airflow and lets dust reach the coil. Replace disposable filters with the same size.
What size filter do I need?
The size is printed on the edge of your current filter, such as length, width and thickness. Match it exactly. If there is no label, measure the slot. A filter that is too small lets air and dust bypass it and coat the coil.
Does a better filter always help?
Not always. A very dense filter can restrict airflow in a system that was not designed for it. If you want better filtration, ask us first. We install media filter boxes and HEPA filtration that are sized to the system.
How do I know the filter is installed the right way?
Look for the arrow on the frame. It should point toward the air handler, in the direction the air moves. The filter should fit snug with no gaps around the edges. If air can slip around it, dust gets past.
My AC still struggles after a new filter. What now?
Check for ice on the indoor line, water near the air handler, or vents with weak airflow. Those point to a coil, drain or airflow problem. Turn the system off if you see ice and call us. The diagnosis is FREE at any hour.
