How to Troubleshoot an AC Unit in Tampa
Short answer: Start with the simple checks in this order: thermostat settings, air filter, breaker, condensate drain line and outdoor unit. Many no-cool calls in Tampa come from one of those. If the system still will not cool, ice shows up, or you hear grinding or buzzing, turn it off and call a licensed tech.

What should I check first when my AC stops cooling?
Work from the easiest fix to the hardest. Most of these take under ten minutes and need no tools.
- Thermostat: Confirm it is set to Cool, the fan is on Auto, and the set temperature is below the room temperature. Replace dead batteries if it has them.
- Air filter: A clogged filter chokes airflow. Pull it out and look at it. If you cannot see light through it, replace it.
- Breaker: Check the breakers for both the indoor air handler and the outdoor unit. A tripped breaker can shut off only one of them.
- Vents and returns: Make sure furniture, rugs or closed vents are not blocking air.
Safe to try:
- Reset the thermostat and replace the batteries or filter.
- Flip a tripped breaker off, then on, one time only.
- Rinse leaves and dirt off the outdoor unit with a garden hose, with the power off.
- Check that the outdoor fan is spinning when the system is calling for cooling.
Call a pro if:
- The breaker trips again right after you reset it.
- You see ice on the copper line or the indoor coil.
- You hear grinding, squealing or loud buzzing.
- The outdoor unit hums but the fan or compressor will not start.
Safety note: Always switch off power at the breaker before touching anything inside the unit, because the capacitor can hold a charge and shock you.
Why is my AC running but blowing warm air?
Check the outdoor unit first. If the fan is not turning, or the unit is not running at all, the cause is often a failed capacitor, contactor or fan motor. If the outdoor unit runs but the air is warm, the problem may be low refrigerant, a dirty coil or a frozen evaporator coil. Refrigerant does not get used up, so low refrigerant means a leak. Topping it off without finding the leak only delays the next call.

Why is there ice on my AC?
Ice usually means restricted airflow or a refrigerant problem. Turn the system off, set the fan to On, and let it thaw. Then check the filter. Florida humidity makes this worse, because a coil that freezes will melt into a lot of water. If the ice returns after a new filter, stop running the system and call us.
Why is water leaking around my air handler?
In Tampa, a clogged condensate drain line is a top cause. Algae builds up in the line, the pan fills and water spills. Many systems have a float switch that shuts the AC off when the pan fills, so a system that suddenly quits can be a drain problem. Check the pan if you can reach it safely. A tune-up includes a drain line flush.
What do common AC symptoms usually point to?
| Symptom | Likely cause | DIY check |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing turns on | Thermostat, breaker or float switch | Settings, breaker, drain pan |
| Blows warm air | Outdoor unit, capacitor, refrigerant leak | Is the outdoor fan spinning? |
| Weak airflow | Dirty filter, blocked return, failing blower | Replace the filter |
| Ice on lines | Low airflow or refrigerant | Turn off and thaw |
| Water near the unit | Clogged drain line | Look at the pan |
| Short cycling | Dirty coil, bad capacitor, thermostat | Filter and thermostat |

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset my AC unit?
Turn the thermostat to Off, switch the system breaker off for about a minute, then turn it back on and set the thermostat to Cool. Do this one time only. If the breaker trips again, stop and call a technician, because repeated resets can damage parts.
Why does my AC keep turning off by itself?
Common causes are a full drain pan tripping the float switch, a frozen coil, a dirty filter or a failing capacitor. Check the filter and the drain pan first. If it keeps shutting off, a technician should find the cause with a diagnosis.
Is it safe to clean the outdoor unit myself?
Light cleaning is fine. Turn off power at the breaker, remove leaves and debris, and rinse the outside of the coil gently with a hose. Do not open the cabinet or touch the electrical parts. A deeper coil cleaning is part of our tune-up.
When should I replace the AC instead of repairing it?
ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement when an air conditioner is more than 10 years old. Repeated repairs and rising bills also point that way. We give a FREE estimate for a replacement so you can compare it with the repair.
Can I fix a refrigerant leak myself?
No. Refrigerant work needs certified technicians and the right equipment. Our techs are A2L refrigerant certified. The leak search is part of our FREE diagnosis, and you approve a written quote before any repair begins.
