Tampa Bay averages roughly 30 nights below 50 degrees a year and only a handful below 40. That is why almost every newer home in this area runs a heat pump, not a gas furnace. A heat pump is the same outdoor unit that cools you in August, just running in reverse to pull heat from outside air into the house. Below about 40 degrees outdoor, efficiency drops, and the system relies on auxiliary heat strips inside the air handler to keep up. When those strips fail or the contactor sticks, you feel it the next cold morning.

Hard freezes are uncommon but real. The Christmas 2022 freeze hit Tampa with 28 degree lows for two nights straight, and the December 2010 cold snap pushed under 30 for almost a week. Both events drove a surge of failed heat strips, tripped breakers, frozen outdoor coils stuck in defrost, and split copper line sets where insulation had degraded. If your system has not had a heating-mode check in the last year, fall is the time to catch a weak heat strip or a tired reversing valve before a 32 degree morning finds it for you.

Refrigerant matters too. As of January 2025, new HVAC installs ship with R-454B (mildly flammable A2L classification) instead of the legacy R-410A. R-410A is being phased down, supply is shrinking, and prices on legacy refrigerant are climbing fast. If you own a 12-plus year old R-410A heat pump and it has a leak, the math on repair vs replace shifted hard in the last 18 months. We will run that math honestly with you.

Two more Tampa-specific issues. Most local homes have the air handler in the attic, which gets to 130-plus degrees in summer and bleeds heat into the supply trunk during winter operation, so duct insulation and sealing matter year-round. And humidity does not vanish in winter. A properly sized heat pump dehumidifies on every cooling cycle and avoids overshooting in heat mode, which is one reason oversized systems feel clammy even at 70 degrees indoor.
