What Each System Actually Removes
Reverse osmosis (RO) and whole-home filtration solve different problems. Most Tampa homes benefit from both working together, not choosing one over the other.
Reverse Osmosis (Point-of-Use)
An RO system uses a semi-permeable membrane to force water through microscopic pores (0.0001 microns), blocking almost everything except the water molecule itself. Removes:
- Chlorine and chloramine (City of Tampa uses chloramine since 2008)
- Fluoride (not removed by carbon filters)
- Lead, arsenic, mercury
- Nitrates (high in Pasco well water)
- TDS (total dissolved solids), including sodium from water softeners
- Pesticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals
Installed under the kitchen sink. Provides drinking and cooking water through a dedicated faucet. 3-5 gallons per day output, stored in a small pressure tank.
Whole-Home Filtration
Whole-home filters install at the main water entry and treat all water entering the home. Uses larger-micron filter media (typically 1-20 microns). Removes:
- Chlorine and chloramine (improves shower quality, extends appliance life)
- Sediment, sand, rust particles
- Mild iron (under 0.3 ppm)
- Chlorine-based odor and taste
Does NOT remove dissolved minerals (hardness), fluoride, lead, or pesticides. For that, pair with a softener and RO.
Tampa Water Quality Reality
Tampa city water runs:
- Chloramine: 3-4 ppm
- Total trihalomethanes (TTHM): 45-60 ppb (near EPA limit of 80 ppb)
- Fluoride: 0.7 ppm (added)
- Hardness: 7-10 gpg
- Total dissolved solids: 300-500 ppm
Pasco and Hillsborough well water varies wildly:
- Hardness: 12-20+ gpg

Well water requires more treatment stages. Iron must be removed BEFORE softener (iron fouls softener resin).
Coastal Tampa / South Tampa Home

RO Waste Water Factor
Traditional RO systems waste 3-5 gallons of “reject” water for every 1 gallon of purified water produced. For a Tampa household using 3 gallons/day of RO water, that is 9-15 gallons/day of water going down the drain. At Tampa water rates ($0.0065/gallon), that adds $22-$36/year to your water bill.
Modern permeate-pump RO systems (Rheem RHHHERO4, APEC Ultimate) improve the waste ratio to 1:1, cutting waste to 3 gallons/day for the same 3 gallons of drinking water. Worth the $200-$300 upcharge.
Septic System Warning
Homes on septic (Lutz, Odessa, outer Plant City) should use permeate-pump RO to reduce waste-water load on the septic system. Traditional RO dumps 9-15 gallons/day of reject water into the septic tank, accelerating pump-out frequency.
