Kitchen Sink Drain Smell: Causes and Fixes

Short answer: A smelly kitchen sink is most often food and grease buildup in the disposal and drain, or a dirty splash guard. Less often it is a dry P-trap, a blocked vent, a partial clog, or a sewer line problem. Clean the disposal and flush with cold water first. If the smell returns in days, call a pro.

What makes a kitchen sink drain smell?

Every sink drain has a P-trap, the curved pipe under the sink that holds a little water. That water plug blocks sewer gas from coming up into your kitchen. Most kitchen odors come from something rotting in the drain, not from the sewer. Here are the causes, in the order we see them most:

  1. Food and grease buildup in the disposal and the drain pipe. Grease coats the pipe walls and traps food scraps that rot.
  2. A dirty disposal splash guard. The rubber flaps hide slime on the underside.
  3. A dry or failing P-trap. No water plug means sewer gas comes up. A cracked or leaking trap does the same.
  4. A clogged or missing vent. Drains need air to flow. A bad vent causes gurgling plus a smell.
  5. A partial clog further down the line. Water drains slowly and waste sits in the pipe.
  6. A missing dishwasher drain loop. Dirty dishwasher water can flow back toward the sink.
  7. A sewer line problem. This is likely when several drains in the house smell.

Safe to try:

  • Run the disposal with plenty of cold water for 30 seconds or more, and grind a few ice cubes to knock off residue.
  • Lift the rubber splash guard and scrub the underside with dish soap and a brush.
  • Run water for a minute in any sink you rarely use, so the trap stays full.
  • Stop pouring grease and coffee grounds down the drain.

Call a pro if:

  • The smell comes back within a few days of cleaning.
  • Several drains smell or gurgle.
  • Drains are slow or back up.
  • You see water under the sink or around the trap.

Safety note: Skip chemical drain cleaners, because they can burn skin, damage pipes and are dangerous if they splash back.

How do I tell a drain smell from a sewer smell?

What you notice Likely cause
Sour, rotten food smell only at one sink Disposal, splash guard or grease in the drain
Sewer smell at a rarely used sink Dry P-trap
Gurgling plus smell Blocked or missing vent
Smell mostly after the dishwasher runs Missing drain loop or dishwasher line
Smell at several drains Main line or sewer problem

If the whole house smells like sewage, read our guide on sewage smell in the house.

Why does the smell keep coming back?

A quick rinse only cleans the top of the pipe. If grease has built up farther down, or a vent is blocked, the odor returns. In Tampa Bay, warm weather speeds up rotting inside a drain, so buildup smells worse here than in cooler climates. A trap that will not hold water also needs attention, and our page on a drain trap not holding water explains why that happens.

When is it the disposal itself?

A disposal that smells even after cleaning may have a worn splash guard, residue packed in the chamber, or a failing unit. If yours is old, noisy or leaking, replacement can make sense. See our garbage disposal installation page for what that involves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my kitchen sink smell like sewage?

Most often the P-trap has dried out or leaks, letting sewer gas rise. A blocked vent or a partial clog can also cause it. If other drains smell too, the main line may be the problem and a plumber should check it.

Is it safe to pour bleach or drain cleaner down the sink?

We do not recommend chemical drain cleaners. They can damage pipes and disposal parts, and they are risky to handle. They also rarely remove the grease layer that causes the smell. Hot soapy water and mechanical cleaning work better.

Why does my sink smell worse after running the dishwasher?

The dishwasher drain may be missing a high loop or air gap, so dirty water can flow back. The disposal inlet may also hold old food. A plumber can check the hose and its connection.

Can a smelly drain be dangerous?

Sewer gas is unpleasant and, in strong amounts, unhealthy. A faint rotten smell from food buildup is usually harmless. If the odor is strong, persistent, or in several rooms, have it checked soon.

How can I keep my kitchen drain from smelling?

Keep grease, coffee grounds and fibrous scraps out of the drain. Run cold water while the disposal works, clean the splash guard regularly, and run water in unused sinks so their traps stay full.
