Thermostat Fan Auto vs On: Best Florida Setting
Short answer: In Tampa Bay, Auto is the better default for most homes. With the fan On, the blower keeps running after the cooling stops, and water left on the cold coil can blow back into your house. Humidity climbs and the blower runs all day. On helps only in a few cases, covered below.

What is the difference between fan Auto and fan On?
On Auto, the blower runs only while the AC is cooling. When the thermostat is satisfied, the blower stops. On the On setting, the blower runs around the clock, whether the compressor is cooling or not.
That sounds harmless, but in Florida the extra run time matters because of how an AC removes moisture.
Safe to try:
- Set the fan to Auto and watch indoor humidity for a few days.
- Check that the air filter is clean and the right size.
- Look at the drain line outlet outside to see that it drips during a cooling cycle.
- Feel the air at a vent after a cycle ends to see if it is damp or musty.
Call a pro if:
- The house stays humid or clammy even with the fan on Auto.
- You smell a musty odor every time the system starts.
- Water pools near the air handler or the drain line stays dry.
- Some rooms stay hot while others are cold.
Safety note: Turn the system off at the thermostat and the breaker before opening any panel on the air handler.
Why is Auto better in Florida?
Your AC cools air and also pulls water out of it. That water collects on the cold evaporator coil and drips into the drain pan. When the cooling stops and the fan keeps running, air blows across a wet coil. Some of that water evaporates and goes back into your rooms as humidity.

Tampa air is already wet, so you do not want to add to it. Higher humidity makes the house feel warmer, which makes the AC run longer. A fan stuck On can also push damp air through the ducts, which feeds the musty smell many homeowners notice. See our page on an AC that smells musty if that sounds familiar.
The blower also runs all day on On. That means more wear on the motor and more air pulled through the filter, so the filter loads up sooner.
When does leaving the fan On make sense?
| Situation | Fan On helps? | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Media filter or air purifier installed | Sometimes | More air passes the filter, but humidity can rise |
| One hot room, one cool room | Sometimes | Evens out temperature, but a duct or airflow fix is the real answer |
| Typical Tampa home, no special need | No | Extra humidity and more blower run time |
| Musty smell or high humidity | No | Can make both worse |
If you want more filtration, you can run the fan On for short stretches and watch your humidity. If it climbs, go back to Auto.
What is the Circulate setting?
Some thermostats have a Circulate mode. It runs the fan for a set number of minutes each hour when the system is idle. It gives some air movement with less blower time than On, but the same moisture concern applies, so watch your humidity.
What fixes comfort and humidity problems for real?
If you are tempted to run the fan On because the house feels uneven or sticky, the fan setting is usually a patch. Two fixes work better. A variable-speed blower runs slower and longer, which pulls more moisture off the coil and evens out temperatures. A whole-home dehumidifier handles humidity separately from cooling. Our guide to high humidity despite AC walks through the causes. A smart thermostat can also help with fan scheduling.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should my thermostat fan be on Auto or On?
For most Tampa Bay homes, Auto. The blower runs only while the AC is cooling, so water on the coil drains away instead of blowing back into the house. Choose On only for a specific reason, like extra filtration, and watch your humidity.
Does running the fan On use more electricity?
Yes, the blower runs far more hours, so it uses more power than on Auto. The exact amount depends on your motor type and run time. A variable-speed motor uses less than a standard one, but Auto is still lighter.
Will fan On cool my house better?
Not really. The fan moves air but does not cool it. In humid weather it can make the house feel muggier because moisture from the coil gets pushed back inside. Better cooling comes from clean filters, good airflow and a healthy system.
Does fan On help with allergies?
It can, if you have a good media filter or air purifier, because more air passes through it. A dirty or cheap filter gains nothing. Watch humidity, since damp air can worsen mold and dust mite problems.
Why does my house feel humid with the fan on Auto?
Common causes are an oversized system that cycles too fast, a dirty coil, weak airflow or a clogged drain. We diagnose it free at any hour. A variable-speed blower or whole-home dehumidifier may be the right fix.
Can a bad fan setting cause a musty smell?
It can contribute. Fan On keeps damp air moving across a wet coil and through the ducts, which helps odors grow. Switching to Auto often helps, but a persistent smell needs a coil and drain inspection.
