Troubleshooting guide
Cracked Toilet Bowl or Tank: Repair or Replace?
Short answer: A crack that leaks, or any crack below the water line in the bowl or tank, means the toilet should be replaced. Epoxy and sealant patches do not hold under water pressure, and a failing tank can flood the bathroom. A hairline crack in the glaze on the outside of the bowl or on the tank lid is usually cosmetic.

Is my cracked toilet repairable?
Porcelain does not heal, and water pressure keeps working on a crack. Anything that holds water, meaning the inside of the bowl, the trap, or the tank, will keep seeping or can let go without warning. Patches and sealants may slow a drip for a few days, but they do not hold, so we do not recommend them.
A crack that only shows in the glaze on the outside of the bowl, or a chip on the tank lid, does not hold water. Those are cosmetic. Lids can be replaced on their own, and a glaze line can be watched over time.
Safe to try:
- Turn off the shutoff valve behind the toilet (turn it clockwise), then flush to empty the tank.
- Dry the toilet completely with a towel, then check where the crack sits compared to the water line.
- Add a few drops of food coloring to the tank, wait 15 minutes, and look for color seeping along the crack or pooling on the floor.
- Put a dry paper towel or towel around the base to catch any water you did not see.
Call a pro if:
- Water seeps, drips or pools from the crack, or the crack is below the water line.
- The crack is getting longer, or you hear a creak or see a bowl or tank piece move.
- The tank or bowl is chipped through to a sharp edge.
- The floor around the base stays wet and you cannot tell where it comes from.
Safety note: A cracked tank or bowl can break and cut you, so shut the water off and do not sit on or lean on the toilet.
How do I tell a crack leak from a different leak?
Water on the floor does not always mean a cracked toilet. Dry everything first, then test one area at a time. The food coloring in the tank helps: if the color shows up on the floor, the tank or its seals leak. If the floor stays clear, look elsewhere.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Water seeping along a crack | Cracked bowl or tank | Replace the toilet |
| Water at the base, toilet rocks | Failed wax ring or loose bolts | Reset the toilet with a new wax ring |
| Water at the tank bolts or the supply line | Worn gasket or supply line | Replace the part |
| Hairline in the glaze, no moisture | Cosmetic crack | Watch it, no repair needed |
A wobbly toilet or a failed wax ring can look just like a crack leak. If the toilet rocks, the flange under it may be damaged, which is a separate repair. See our toilet flange replacement page.
What causes toilets to crack?
Most cracks come from stress. Overtightened tank bolts or closet bolts are common. A toilet set on an uneven floor or a loose flange flexes every time someone sits. Heavy impacts and dropped tank lids also crack porcelain. Older toilets develop crazing and hairlines with age.
What should I do right now?
- Shut off the valve behind the toilet and flush to empty the tank.
- Mop up standing water so it does not soak the subfloor, which matters on slab and wood floors alike in our humidity.
- Stop using the toilet until a plumber looks at it.
Many Tampa homes have older toilets, and a new one is usually the cleaner answer. Look for a WaterSense model. The regional Tampa Bay Water Wise program offers a rebate on WaterSense toilets with proof of installation. You apply for it yourself at the Tampa Bay Water Wise toilet page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fix a cracked toilet bowl with epoxy?
Not reliably. Epoxy and sealants may stop a drip for a short time, but constant water pressure and flexing break the patch loose. A crack below the water line should be treated as a replacement, because a failing bowl can leak into the subfloor.
Is a hairline crack in the toilet dangerous?
Not if it is only in the glaze on the outside and stays dry. Check it with a dry towel and food coloring in the tank. If it seeps, grows or sits below the water line, shut the water off and call a plumber.
Can a cracked tank be repaired?
Usually no. Tanks hold water all day under constant load, so a crack grows and can split. If only the lid is cracked, the lid can be replaced alone. A crack in the tank body means replacing the tank or the whole toilet.
Can I just replace the tank and keep the bowl?
Sometimes, if the tank and bowl are a matched set that is still available. On older toilets, parts are hard to find, and a new matched toilet often makes more sense. We check this during the FREE diagnosis.
How do I know the leak is not the wax ring?
A wax ring leak shows at the base and often comes with a toilet that rocks or a sewer smell. Dry the floor, flush a few times, and watch. If the water is only at the base and the porcelain is dry, the seal is the likely cause.
Is there a rebate for a new toilet?
The regional Tampa Bay Water Wise program offers a rebate on WaterSense toilets with proof of installation. The homeowner applies. Check its toilet retrofit page for current rules before you buy.
