What a package unit is
A package unit puts the whole system in one cabinet outside the house, instead of a condenser outside and an air handler inside.
Everything in one box
The compressor, both coils and the blower sit in one outdoor cabinet. The ducts connect to it through the wall, the floor or the roof.
Where you find them
Mobile and manufactured homes, homes with no room inside for an air handler, some older ranch homes, and rooftops.
Straight cool or heat pump
A straight-cool unit cools and uses a heat strip for heat. A heat pump package unit heats and cools with the same system.

Your price depends on the tonnage, straight cool or heat pump, and how the unit connects to your ducts. A thermostat and haul-away of the old unit are included. The permit fee is billed separately. You get the price in writing before any work starts.
How a package unit replacement works
- FREE estimateWe size the system for your home, check the pad or roof curb and the duct connections, and give you a written price.
- PermitWe pull the permit and schedule the inspection.
- Install dayWe remove the old unit, set and secure the new one, connect the ducts, power and thermostat, and start it up.
- Haul-away and inspectionWe haul the old unit away, and the county inspection follows.

- Mobile home ductsMobile home ducts run under the floor and get crushed, torn or chewed by animals. We replace them with R-4.2 insulated flex at $999 per drop when there are 3 feet or more of crawl space, $100 more per drop from 2 to 3 feet, and we haul the old ducts away.
- WindOutdoor units in Tampa Bay are secured against hurricane winds. On a recent Tampa package unit install we added hurricane tie-downs to the new unit.
- RefrigerantGoodman and Daikin package units use R-32. GrandAire uses R-454B.

Is a heat pump package unit worth it?
In Tampa Bay a heat pump package unit heats more cheaply than a heat strip on most winter days. It costs more up front than a straight-cool unit, and we price both so you can compare.
Can you put a package unit on my roof?
Yes, when the roof and curb support it. If a crane is needed to lift the unit, it is $650.
