Troubleshooting Guide

AC Running Constantly in Tampa?

AC running non-stop in Tampa heat is usually normal (humidity demands long cycles). But if it literally NEVER turns off and the house still feels warm, something is wrong. 4 most common causes below.

Quick Answer

AC running constantly in Tampa = 4 causes: (1) thermostat set too low (under 72°F is unrealistic for Tampa heat), (2) refrigerant leak (AC can’t reach setpoint), (3) dirty coils/filter restricting airflow, or (4) undersized AC for your home. Fix: thermostat $0, filter $89, coil clean $279, refrigerant $399-$599. Call (813) 343-2212.

4 Reasons AC Never Stops

Thermostat Too Low

DIY possible

Symptom: Set to 68-70°F, unrealistic in Tampa summer; AC runs continuously trying.

Raise setpoint to 74-78°F (DOE recommended 78°F for energy efficiency).

Low Refrigerant

Call a tech

Symptom: AC runs but can’t reach setpoint, bills climbing.

Leak detection + repair $399-$599 + recharge $95/lb.

Dirty Coils/Filter

DIY possible

Symptom: Visible dirt on filter or outdoor coil.

Filter $89, professional coil cleaning $279.

Undersized AC

Call a tech

Symptom: AC has always struggled to cool, worse in Aug/Sept.

Proper load calculation ($0 with free in-home quote). Upsize unit: $6,643-$15,406 full replace.

Why Your AC Runs Constantly in Tampa

Here is the honest first answer: in the peak of a Tampa summer, when it is 95 degrees with brutal humidity, your AC running almost nonstop is normal and correct. The system is sized to keep up on a design day by running continuously, and a unit that cycles off frequently in July is often the one that cannot pull humidity. The real warning sign is when the AC runs constantly AND cannot reach your setpoint, or when it runs nonstop in mild weather (78 to 85 degrees) when it should be cycling. Here are the causes we find, ranked by frequency.

  1. Dirty air filter or coil. The most common fixable cause. A clogged filter or a dirty evaporator or condenser coil chokes airflow and heat transfer, so the system runs and runs without satisfying the thermostat. Tampa pollen and humidity load filters and coils fast.
  2. Low refrigerant from a leak. A system low on R-410A or R-454B loses cooling capacity and runs continuously trying to catch up, often with ice on the line set.
  3. Leaky or undersized ductwork. Cooled air leaking into a hot Tampa attic before it reaches the rooms means the system never wins. Very common in homes built in the 1990s and 2000s.
  4. Aging system losing capacity. A 12-plus-year-old unit with a tired compressor simply cannot move the heat it once did.
  5. Thermostat fan set to ON instead of AUTO. If the fan runs constantly, people think the whole system is running constantly. Switching to AUTO fixes the perception and improves humidity removal.
  6. Undersized system or poor insulation. A unit too small for the load, or a house leaking heat through bad seals and insufficient attic insulation, runs nonstop on hot days.
  7. Dirty condenser or failing capacitor. A debris-packed outdoor coil or a weak capacitor makes the system work harder and longer.

What You Can Check Before Calling

Consider the weather first. If it is a brutal Tampa afternoon and the system is holding your setpoint while running nonstop, that is likely fine. If it is a mild day and the unit will not shut off, or it is hot and the indoor temperature keeps climbing past the setpoint, something is wrong.

Check the filter. Pull it and hold it to the light. If you cannot see through it, replace it and run the system an hour. A fresh filter often shortens run times noticeably. In Tampa we recommend 4-inch media filters over thin 1-inch pleated ones because they load slower in our pollen and dust.

Set the thermostat fan to AUTO, not ON. On ON, the blower never stops even when cooling is satisfied, which also re-evaporates moisture off the coil and leaves your house humid.

Walk to the outdoor condenser. Hose off any grass, leaves, and lint packed into the fins (system off, rinse from inside out, no pressure washer). Make sure two feet of clearance surrounds it.

Check for obvious comfort drains: blinds open to the afternoon sun, a door left ajar, a setpoint someone dropped to 68. If the basics are clean and the unit still cannot keep up or runs in mild weather, the cause is refrigerant, ducts, capacity, or age, and that is a FREE diagnosis for us with full gauges and a static-pressure reading.

Fix Options and Cost

What you pay depends on the actual cause. Here is where Tampa Bay pricing typically lands in 2026, with FREE diagnosis on every call.

  • Filter and coil cleaning: $295 to $495 for a full coil cleaning, indoor or outdoor.
  • Capacitor replacement: $245 to $425 installed.
  • Refrigerant leak repair plus recharge: $495 to $1,495 depending on leak location.
  • Duct sealing or repair: $495 to $1,500 depending on how much of the run is leaking or undersized.
  • Right-sized AC replacement when the unit is undersized or aged out: $7,500 to $12,500 for a properly sized Goodman or Daikin system, including an ACCA Manual J load calculation so it is matched to your home, not oversized or undersized.
  • Variable-speed upgrade: ramps output to match the load and runs longer at low speed by design, which is efficient and pulls humidity better in our climate.

FAQ

Is running all day normal in Tampa?

Largely yes, Tampa humidity + heat means AC works hard. “Long cycles” = good for humidity control. “Never stops” + doesn’t cool = bad.

What's the ideal Tampa thermostat setting?

DOE recommends 78°F. For Tampa comfort: 74-76°F is realistic. Lower than 72°F in summer = unrealistic demand.

Will always-running AC wear it out faster?

Yes. Tampa ACs log 2-3x the runtime of northern systems. Annual maintenance ($249+) significantly extends life.

Can low Freon cause this?

Yes, AC can’t cool efficiently, runs continuously trying to reach setpoint but never does. Also freezes the coil.

Is my AC too small?

Possibly. A 1,500 sq ft Tampa home needs ~3 tons. If yours is 2.5 tons or smaller, undersized. Manual J calc confirms.

Is it normal for my AC to run all day in Tampa summer?

Yes. On a 95-degree, high-humidity Tampa afternoon, a correctly sized system is designed to run almost continuously to hold your setpoint, and a unit that short-cycles in that heat often leaves the house humid. The concern is when it runs nonstop but cannot reach the setpoint, or runs constantly in mild 78 to 85 degree weather when it should cycle.

Will constant running raise my electric bill a lot?

If the constant running is caused by a dirty filter, low refrigerant, leaky ducts, or an aging system, then yes, your TECO or Duke bill climbs because the unit works harder for less cooling. Fixing the root cause (cleaning, sealing, recharging, or right-sizing) brings run times and the bill back down.

Should I lower the thermostat to cool the house faster?

No. The AC cools at the same rate regardless of how low you set it, so a lower setpoint just makes it run even longer. Set a comfortable target, switch the fan to AUTO, and if it still cannot reach that target, have it diagnosed.
