What Counts as “Traditional” vs “Smart”

The thermostat market has split into three tiers, and the language has gotten confusing. Here is how we classify them for Tampa homeowners.

Traditional Thermostats

  • Mercury bulb (legacy): Pre-1990 homes sometimes still have these. Mercury is a hazard if the thermostat breaks, and efficiency is poor. Swap at any replacement opportunity.
  • Non-programmable digital: Honeywell T1 Pro, basic round dials. Maintains one temperature setpoint 24/7. $25-$60, no features beyond temp control.
  • Programmable digital (7-day schedule): Honeywell and White-Rodgers both make these. Set a weekday schedule separate from weekend. Real energy savings vs non-programmable if the schedule is actually used. $43-$100.

Smart Thermostats

  • WiFi-enabled with app: Basic connectivity, remote temp change, no learning. Honeywell T6 Pro, Emerson Sensi. $120-$194.
  • Learning algorithms: Nest Learning Thermostat observes your habits and auto-programs. $269-$299.
  • Geofencing + room sensors: Ecobee Premium with SmartSensor support, knows which rooms are occupied. $269-$299.
  • Voice control integrated: All modern smart thermostats work with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit.

The Gray Area

Honeywell T6 Pro WiFi and similar products are technically smart (WiFi + app) but have no learning or geofencing. We call these “smart-lite.” If your primary want is remote temperature adjustment from your phone, smart-lite is enough. If you want the thermostat to optimize your schedule automatically, you need full-smart.

Tampa Humidity Control Advantage of Smart Thermostats

This is the single biggest reason to choose smart over traditional in our climate. Tampa summers are very humid outdoors from June through September. Indoor comfort is as much about humidity as temperature, and only smart thermostats measure and respond to humidity.

The Overcool-to-Dehumidify Trick

Ecobee Premium with humidity setpoint can overcool by 2 degrees below the target temperature to pull extra moisture out of the air, then let the house naturally warm back to setpoint. This “feels like” cooler and drier than a traditional thermostat hitting the same temp with no humidity awareness.

Traditional thermostats have no humidity sensor. They hit the temperature setpoint, then shut off. On a typical Tampa August day, this leaves indoor humidity at 60-70 percent even with the AC running normally. That is the “clammy” feeling every Tampa native recognizes.

Real Savings on Tampa Cooling Bills

Smart thermostats with humidity control can save on cooling costs versus a programmable traditional thermostat. The savings come from:

  • Geofencing raises temp when you leave the house
  • Schedule learning reduces unnecessary cooling cycles
  • Humidity setpoint prevents overcooling the whole house to feel dry
  • Eco+ mode shifts cooling to off-peak hours (TECO time-of-use compatible)

C-Wire Requirements in Older Tampa Homes

Pre-2010 Tampa homes rarely have a C-wire (common wire) at the thermostat. Heat pump systems especially skipped it because there was no gas furnace common-wire to piggyback off. Smart thermostats need continuous 24V from a C-wire, so this becomes a real install blocker.

Your Options If No C-Wire

  • Venstar Add-a-Wire adapter: $32 device at the air handler adds a C-wire using existing 4-wire cable. Works with most systems.
  • Ecobee Power Extender Kit (PEK): Included FREE with every Ecobee purchase. Installs at the air handler, adds C-wire on 4-wire systems. This is why we recommend Ecobee for older Tampa homes.
  • Replace thermostat cable with 5-wire: $479 professional install. Only needed if you already have a 4-wire and Add-a-Wire does not work.
  • Nest 3rd gen power stealing: Nest claims to work without C-wire by “stealing” power during off cycles. In practice, this works on some systems and causes problems on heat pumps. We do not recommend Nest without C-wire on Tampa heat pumps.

Programmable Thermostat Still Saves Money

Do not dismiss traditional programmable thermostats. If you cannot justify a $250 smart thermostat, a $40 Honeywell 7-day programmable thermostat still saves money versus non-programmable.

Tampa Schedule Template

For a working couple with no kids home during the day:

  • Weekday 6 AM to 8 AM: 74 degrees (morning routine)
  • Weekday 8 AM to 5 PM: 80 degrees (away)
  • Weekday 5 PM to 10 PM: 74 degrees (evening)
  • Weekday 10 PM to 6 AM: 72 degrees (sleep)
  • Weekend: 74 degrees all day

This schedule averages 76 degrees over 24 hours, versus a typical non-programmable setting of 72 degrees. That 4-degree average difference noticeably cuts Tampa cooling costs.

What Smart Thermostats Actually Cost Tampa Homeowners

  • Nest Learning (3rd gen): $269-$299 thermostat, $299 professional install = $528-$558 total
  • Ecobee Premium with room sensor: $269-$299 thermostat (includes PEK), $299 install = $528-$558 total
  • Honeywell T10 Pro Smart: $214-$229 thermostat, $299 install = $478-$508 total
  • Basic programmable: $43-$80 thermostat plus $299 install, or $379 installed with our Value programmable thermostat

TECO offers a $50 rebate for ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats installed in your primary residence. Ecobee Premium, Nest Learning, and Honeywell T10 all qualify.

What We Recommend

For Tampa, smart thermostat is almost always worth it. $250-$550 premium over traditional, payback in 1-2 years.

Top picks: Ecobee Premium ($909, best humidity control + sensors) or Nest Learning ($909, best UI). See smart thermostat comparison.

FAQ

  • What are the downsides of using a smart thermostat?

Smart thermostats cost more upfront, require a C-wire (common wire) that older Tampa Bay homes often lack, and depend on a stable Wi-Fi connection. Setup can be complex, and some models collect usage data. In high-humidity coastal climates, sensor accuracy matters more, so a poorly placed smart thermostat can overcool or short-cycle your system.

  • What thermostat do HVAC techs recommend?

Most licensed HVAC technicians recommend a smart thermostat for Tampa Bay homes running AC eight or more months a year, because remote scheduling and humidity-aware setpoints reduce runtime and wear. For simpler systems or rental units, a quality programmable thermostat is reliable and low-maintenance. Home Therapist techs (license CAC1819196) assess your wiring and system before recommending a model.

  • What happens if Wi-Fi goes out with a smart thermostat?

If your Wi-Fi goes down, a smart thermostat loses remote access and cloud-based scheduling but continues running on its last saved schedule locally. You can still adjust temperature manually at the device. App control, voice commands, and energy reports are unavailable until the connection is restored.

  • Do you really need a programmable thermostat?

In Tampa Bay, where cooling runs nearly year-round, a programmable or smart thermostat pays for itself by automatically raising the setpoint while you are away and cooling down before you return. A manual thermostat works fine but relies entirely on you remembering to adjust it, which most households do not do consistently, leaving the AC running at full comfort settings all day.

  • What are the disadvantages of a smart thermostat?

The main drawbacks are higher upfront cost, Wi-Fi dependence, and occasional wiring or compatibility problems. Some models need a C-wire for constant power. Savings also depend on how you use it. We install all brands and check compatibility during a FREE estimate, open 24/7.

  • Can I replace my regular thermostat with a smart thermostat?

Yes, in most homes a smart thermostat replaces a regular one. The key check is wiring: many models need a C-wire for steady power, and some systems need an adapter or a new low-voltage wire run. We confirm compatibility during a FREE estimate, and Tampa Bay same-day service is available on many jobs.

  • Why do HVAC guys hate nest thermostats?

Techs dislike them mainly when installs go wrong: a missing C-wire, a mismatched system type, or settings that fight the equipment. Nest works well on compatible systems that are wired correctly. We install all brands, test the setup, and handle the wiring so it runs properly.

C-wire needed?

Most smart thermostats yes. Pre-2010 Tampa homes often lack. $214 retrofit adds it.

DIY install?

If you have C-wire, yes. Otherwise call us for install + C-wire.

Best for Tampa humidity?

Ecobee Premium, has humidity control mode built in.

Payback period?

Typical Tampa: 12-18 months. 8-9 month cooling season amplifies savings.

Will my heat pump work with a Nest thermostat?

Yes, but with caveats. Nest works fine on heat pumps that have a C-wire. Without a C-wire, Nest’s power-stealing can cause short-cycling on heat pumps. On older Tampa homes without C-wire, we recommend Ecobee (includes PEK) over Nest.

Can I install a smart thermostat myself?

Yes if you are comfortable with 24V low-voltage wiring. Turn off power at the breaker, photograph your existing wiring before removing, and match wire labels. If you have heat pump with emergency heat (Em Heat) wiring, or you do not have a C-wire, consider professional install ($299 install labor).

How do I know if I have a C-wire without opening the wall?

Remove the existing thermostat faceplate and look at the terminal block behind it. If you see a wire labeled “C” attached to a terminal, you have a C-wire. If the C terminal is empty or there is no C terminal, you do not.

What if I do not need a wall adapter?

If you have a C-wire already, most smart thermostats install without any adapter. Just match wire labels to terminals on the new thermostat.

Smart thermostats on rental property, worth it?

Usually no for rental properties. Tenants often do not use the smart features, and the higher cost does not pay back compared to a basic programmable set on a fixed schedule.

Can a smart thermostat replace a programmable?

Yes. Any smart thermostat installation includes everything a programmable does (schedule-based temperature control) plus the smart features.

Does smart thermostat integrate with Alexa or Google Home?

All three major brands (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell) support Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomeKit. Voice commands work for temperature changes, scheduling, and status queries.

Are there data privacy concerns with smart thermostats?

Smart thermostats collect usage data and in some cases location data (geofencing). Review each manufacturer’s privacy policy. Ecobee and Honeywell allow more granular opt-out controls than Nest. None of them share data with TECO without your explicit consent.
