• A single click every time the thermostat calls for cooling — normal contactor engagement. More than one click per cycle or rapid repeated clicking — a failing contactor or a capacitor that cannot hold the motor online
• The outdoor unit hums for two to three seconds after the click, then goes silent, then clicks again — the compressor is trying to start but the capacitor cannot provide enough starting energy
• The house is getting slightly warmer each day even though you can hear the system “working” — the clicking is masking a compressor that is barely running or not running at all
• The clicking becomes more frequent as the outdoor temperature climbs — a heat-related capacitor or contactor failure that is more pronounced under higher amp loads
• A faint burning smell accompanies the clicking — contactor contacts beginning to arc, which means the contactor is close to complete failure or weld-closed failure

Here is the simple rule: if the clicking is accompanied by the system NOT cooling, turn it off immediately and call. Every time a compressor tries to start against a failed capacitor and fails, it draws locked-rotor current through the motor windings — roughly five to seven times normal running amperage.
