Reverse Osmosis vs Whole-Home Filter

RO removes almost everything (purest water). Whole-home filter is broader coverage but less pure.

Quick Verdict

Reverse osmosis (RO): removes 95-99% of contaminants. $400-$800 installed, serves kitchen sink only. Whole-home filter: removes chlorine + sediment + some minerals. $1,500-$3,000 installed, serves entire home. Best combo: whole-home Rheem/Halo softener/filter + RO at kitchen sink. What Each System Actually Removes

Reverse osmosis (RO) and whole-home filtration solve different problems. Most Tampa homes benefit from both working together, not choosing one over the other.

Reverse Osmosis (Point-of-Use)

An RO system uses a semi-permeable membrane to force water through microscopic pores (0.0001 microns), blocking almost everything except the water molecule itself. Removes:

  • Chlorine and chloramine (City of Tampa uses chloramine since 2008)
  • Fluoride (not removed by carbon filters)
  • Lead, arsenic, mercury
  • Nitrates (high in Pasco well water)
  • TDS (total dissolved solids), including sodium from water softeners
  • Pesticides, herbicides, pharmaceuticals

Installed under the kitchen sink. Provides drinking and cooking water through a dedicated faucet. 3-5 gallons per day output, stored in a small pressure tank.

Whole-Home Filtration

Whole-home filters install at the main water entry and treat all water entering the home. Uses larger-micron filter media (typically 1-20 microns). Removes:

  • Chlorine and chloramine (improves shower quality, extends appliance life)
  • Sediment, sand, rust particles
  • Mild iron (under 0.3 ppm)
  • Chlorine-based odor and taste

Does NOT remove dissolved minerals (hardness), fluoride, lead, or pesticides. For that, pair with a softener and RO.

Tampa Water Quality Reality

Tampa city water runs:

  • Chloramine: 3-4 ppm
  • Total trihalomethanes (TTHM): 45-60 ppb (near EPA limit of 80 ppb)
  • Fluoride: 0.7 ppm (added)
  • Hardness: 7-10 gpg
  • Total dissolved solids: 300-500 ppm

Pasco and Hillsborough well water varies wildly:

  • Hardness: 12-20+ gpg
  • Iron: 0.2-3.0 ppm (ranges from minor to heavy)
  • Hydrogen sulfide: variable (rotten-egg smell)
  • Nitrates: 1-10 ppm (from agricultural runoff)

Ideal Tampa Pairing Strategies

Standard Tampa City Water Home

Whole-home Halo 5 ($2,400-$3,200) + under-sink RO ($600-$900). Total: $3,000-$4,100.

Halo 5 handles chloramine + sediment at every tap. RO provides drinking-quality water at kitchen for cooking, coffee, ice maker.

Pasco/Lutz Well Water Home

Iron filter ($1,200-$2,500) + whole-home softener ($2,400-$3,800) + UV disinfection ($500-$900) + under-sink RO ($900-$1,400). Total: $5,000-$8,600.

Well water requires more treatment stages. Iron must be removed BEFORE softener (iron fouls softener resin).

Coastal Tampa / South Tampa Home

Whole-home Halo 5 ($2,400-$3,200) + whole-home softener ($2,400-$3,800) + RO with remineralization ($1,200-$1,800). Total: $6,000-$8,800.

Coastal homes may see brackish infiltration. RO handles any chloride that gets through.

RO Waste Water Factor

Traditional RO systems waste 3-5 gallons of “reject” water for every 1 gallon of purified water produced. For a Tampa household using 3 gallons/day of RO water, that is 9-15 gallons/day of water going down the drain. At Tampa water rates ($0.0065/gallon), that adds $22-$36/year to your water bill.

Modern permeate-pump RO systems (Rheem RHHHERO4, APEC Ultimate) improve the waste ratio to 1:1, cutting waste to 3 gallons/day for the same 3 gallons of drinking water. Worth the $200-$300 upcharge.

Septic System Warning

Homes on septic (Lutz, Odessa, outer Plant City) should use permeate-pump RO to reduce waste-water load on the septic system. Traditional RO dumps 9-15 gallons/day of reject water into the septic tank, accelerating pump-out frequency.

What We Recommend

Do both if possible, whole-home Rheem/Halo + RO at kitchen sink. Total cost $2,000-$4,000. Best water quality achievable.

Just RO: cheapest way to get clean drinking water in Tampa. Doesn’t help shower, laundry, or appliances.

Just whole-home: protects appliances + improves shower/laundry. Drinking water quality good but not RO-level pure.

FAQ

RO waste water?

Yes, 3 gal waste per 1 gal purified. Modern “high recovery” RO reduces to 1:1.

RO removes everything?

Yes, including beneficial minerals. Some RO systems re-mineralize afterward. Drinking pure RO long-term has mixed opinions.

Combo install?

Yes, common Tampa setup. Whole-home at entry, RO at kitchen.

Do I need RO if I have a whole-home filter?

Whole-home filters do not remove fluoride, lead, or dissolved salts. If you want drinking-quality water, RO is the standard pairing with whole-home filtration.

Will an RO remove beneficial minerals?

Yes. RO removes nearly everything, including magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Some systems add a remineralization stage to put minerals back after purification. Worth considering if you care about water taste and mineral content.

Can I use RO water in my coffee maker?

Yes. RO is ideal for coffee because the removed minerals prevent scale buildup in the machine. Some coffee enthusiasts add back a tiny mineral content (SCA Water Standard) for optimal extraction.

Is chloramine harder to remove than chlorine?

Yes. Basic charcoal filters (pitchers, fridge filters) do not remove chloramine effectively. You need catalytic carbon or RO. The Halo 5 uses catalytic carbon, which is why it works for Tampa water.

How long does an RO membrane last?

10-15 years with proper pre-filtration. Pre-filter (sediment) every 6-12 months, carbon pre-filter every 6-12 months, post-filter (polish) every 12 months. We schedule annual maintenance for every install.

Can I install RO myself?

Yes, most under-sink RO kits come with DIY instructions. Plan 2-3 hours for first install. Florida does not require a plumbing permit for under-sink filter installation.

What is the difference between Halo 5 and Halo 6?

Halo 5 is 5-stage carbon/sediment filtration + scale inhibition. Halo 6 adds UV disinfection in a 6th stage. UV kills bacteria and viruses, which matters for well water but not city water.

Does a water softener affect RO performance?

Positively. Softened water extends RO membrane life by preventing scale buildup. RO removes the sodium that softeners add, so RO water stays low-sodium.
