What Counts as “Traditional” vs “Smart”

The thermostat market has split into three tiers, and the language has gotten confusing. Here is how we classify them for Tampa homeowners.

Traditional Thermostats

• Mercury bulb (legacy): Pre-1990 homes sometimes still have these. Mercury is a hazard if the thermostat breaks, and efficiency is poor. Swap at any replacement opportunity.
• Non-programmable digital: Honeywell T1 Pro, basic round dials. Maintains one temperature setpoint 24/7. $25-$60, no features beyond temp control.
• Programmable digital (7-day schedule): Honeywell and White-Rodgers both make these. Set a weekday schedule separate from weekend. 10-15 percent energy savings vs non-programmable if schedule is actually used. $40-$100.

Smart Thermostats

• WiFi-enabled with app: Basic connectivity, remote temp change, no learning. Honeywell T6 Pro, Emerson Sensi. $120-$180.
• Learning algorithms: Nest Learning Thermostat observes your habits and auto-programs. $249-$279.
• Geofencing + room sensors: Ecobee Premium with SmartSensor support, knows which rooms are occupied. $249-$279.
• Voice control integrated: All modern smart thermostats work with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit.

The Gray Area

Honeywell T6 Pro WiFi and similar products are technically smart (WiFi + app) but have no learning or geofencing. We call these “smart-lite.” If your primary want is remote temperature adjustment from your phone, smart-lite is enough. If you want the thermostat to optimize your schedule automatically, you need full-smart.

Tampa Humidity Control Advantage of Smart Thermostats

This is the single biggest reason to choose smart over traditional in our climate. Tampa summers run 80-90 percent outdoor humidity from June through September. Indoor comfort is as much about humidity as temperature, and only smart thermostats measure and respond to humidity.

The Overcool-to-Dehumidify Trick

Ecobee Premium with humidity setpoint can overcool by 2 degrees below the target temperature to pull extra moisture out of the air, then let the house naturally warm back to setpoint. This “feels like” cooler and drier than a traditional thermostat hitting the same temp with no humidity awareness.

Traditional thermostats have no humidity sensor. They hit the temperature setpoint, then shut off. On a typical Tampa August day, this leaves indoor humidity at 60-70 percent even with the AC running normally. That is the “clammy” feeling every Tampa native recognizes.

Real Savings on Tampa Cooling Bills

Smart thermostats with humidity control typically save 8-15 percent on cooling costs versus a programmable traditional thermostat, which translates to $150-$300 per year on a typical Tampa summer. The savings come from:

• Geofencing raises temp when you leave the house

C-Wire Requirements in Older Tampa Homes

Pre-2010 Tampa homes rarely have a C-wire (common wire) at the thermostat. Heat pump systems especially skipped it because there was no gas furnace common-wire to piggyback off. Smart thermostats need continuous 24V from a C-wire, so this becomes a real install blocker.

Your Options If No C-Wire

• Venstar Add-a-Wire adapter: $30 device at the air handler adds a C-wire using existing 4-wire cable. Works with most systems.
• Ecobee Power Extender Kit (PEK): Included FREE with every Ecobee purchase. Installs at the air handler, adds C-wire on 4-wire systems. This is why we recommend Ecobee for older Tampa homes.
• Replace thermostat cable with 5-wire: $279 to $449 professional install. Only needed if you already have a 4-wire and Add-a-Wire does not work.
• Nest 3rd gen power stealing: Nest claims to work without C-wire by “stealing” power during off cycles. In practice, this works on some systems and causes problems on heat pumps. We do not recommend Nest without C-wire on Tampa heat pumps.

Programmable Thermostat Still Saves Money

Do not dismiss traditional programmable thermostats. If you cannot justify a $250 smart thermostat, a $40 Honeywell 7-day programmable thermostat still saves 10-15 percent versus non-programmable.

Tampa Schedule Template

For a working couple with no kids home during the day:

• Weekday 6 AM to 8 AM: 74 degrees (morning routine)
• Weekday 8 AM to 5 PM: 80 degrees (away)
• Weekday 5 PM to 10 PM: 74 degrees (evening)
• Weekday 10 PM to 6 AM: 72 degrees (sleep)
• Weekend: 74 degrees all day

This schedule averages 76 degrees over 24 hours, versus a typical non-programmable setting of 72 degrees. That 4-degree average difference cuts Tampa cooling costs 15-20 percent.
