A blank, frozen, or unresponsive thermostat almost always means the low-voltage power feeding it got interrupted somewhere. The thermostat itself is rarely the failed part. Here are the causes we find most often on Tampa Bay service calls, ranked by frequency.

1. Tripped condensate float switch. This is the number one cause in Tampa, and most homeowners have never heard of it. Your AC pulls gallons of water out of our humid air every day. When the condensate drain line clogs with algae (which happens constantly here from May through October), a safety float switch trips and cuts power to the whole system, including the thermostat, to stop water from overflowing and flooding your ceiling.
2. Dead thermostat batteries. Many models run on AA or AAA batteries even when hardwired. A blank screen is often just dead batteries.
3. Blown low-voltage fuse on the air handler board. A small 3 to 5 amp automotive-style fuse on the control board protects the 24-volt circuit. A wiring short pops it and the thermostat goes dark.
4. Tripped breaker. A power surge from a Tampa afternoon thunderstorm trips the air handler or condenser breaker.
