Plumbing Troubleshooting

Garbage Disposal Humming Not Spinning?

Disposal hums but blades won’t turn, usually a jam you can fix in 5 minutes. CFC1431159.

Quick Answer

Disposal humming but not spinning = jam (90% of cases). DIY fix in 5 minutes: (1) Turn OFF disposal + water, (2) Insert Allen wrench in bottom hex socket, turn back/forth to free blades, (3) Press red reset button on bottom, (4) Try again. If still humming: motor failed, replacement $399-$599 labor + disposal cost. Call (813) 343-2212.

DIY Step 1: The Allen Wrench Fix You Can Do Right Now

Before calling anyone, try this. Most humming disposals have a jammed flywheel, and Insinkerator and Waste King both build a manual override into the bottom of the unit for exactly this situation. This takes about two minutes and costs nothing.

  • Step 1: Turn the disposal switch OFF and unplug the unit (or shut off the circuit breaker). Never put your hand inside the disposal, even when it is off.
  • Step 2: Look under the disposal at the center of the bottom. You will see a hexagonal socket, typically 1/4-inch on InSinkErator models. This is the manual rotation port.
  • Step 3: Insert a 1/4-inch hex (Allen) wrench and work it back and forth. You are manually rotating the flywheel to dislodge whatever is jamming it. It will feel stiff at first, then break free. Most jams free up within 30 seconds of working the wrench.
  • Step 4: Use disposal tongs or a wooden spoon to reach inside from the top and remove any debris you can see or feel. Never use your bare hand.
  • Step 5: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. It will have popped out when the thermal overload tripped. Push it in until it clicks.
  • Step 6: Restore power, run cold water, then flip the switch. If it runs, you are done. If it still hums or trips again immediately, the jam is not cleared or the motor is damaged.

If you do not have a hex wrench, a disposal wrench key is available at any hardware store for about $5 and fits most brands. Some newer Waste King models use a different manual port, but the same principle applies: consult the model’s manual for the port location.

Early Warning Signs Before a Full Disposal Jam

A complete disposal jam rarely happens without earlier signals. These appear over days or weeks before the motor locks entirely.

  • Grinding takes longer than usual on the same food load. The impeller blades are dulled or the clearance between blade and grinding ring is reduced by accumulated debris.
  • Disposal works but makes a grinding or rattling sound it did not make before. A small hard object such as a fruit pit, bottle cap, or bone fragment is rolling inside the grinding chamber without being fully caught by the impellers. That item will eventually wedge and jam the flywheel.
  • Disposal hums briefly, then shuts off on its own. The thermal overload is tripping intermittently because the impellers are working harder than normal. Each trip is a warning before the permanent jam.
  • Motor reset button trips immediately when the disposal is turned on. The jam is complete and the flywheel cannot move at all. This is the fully-developed stage where the DIY Allen wrench fix is needed.

The Tampa Disposal Rule: Fix or Replace

Use these three criteria to decide whether a service call to clear the jam is the right move or whether replacement makes more economic sense before you spend money on labor.

  • Unit age over 10 years: Disposal motors typically last 8 to 15 years. A unit over 10 years old that has jammed for the first time may clear fine and run for several more years, but if it has jammed twice or is making grinding sounds, labor to repair a near-end-of-life unit is rarely cost-effective compared to a new installation.
  • Motor hums but Allen wrench fix does not free it: If the flywheel will not move with the hex wrench, the jam is either a hard foreign object deeply wedged in the grinding ring or the motor shaft itself has seized. Both scenarios usually mean replacement is less expensive than labor-intensive disassembly and repair.
  • Reset button trips immediately after power is restored: If the thermal overload trips again the moment you reset it and try to run the unit, the motor windings are either damaged or the flywheel still cannot move. At that point a service call is needed to diagnose whether the obstruction is still present or the motor has burned out.

Florida Code Corner: Disposal Installation Permits

Replacing an existing garbage disposal with a new unit of similar size requires no permit in Hillsborough County. You are swapping one appliance for another on existing plumbing and electrical connections. Installing a garbage disposal for the first time in a kitchen that has never had one is a different situation. First-time installation requires tapping the drain line at the sink and adding a new drain connection, which is plumbing work. If the kitchen has no dedicated circuit for the disposal, a new circuit must be added, which is electrical permit work. We handle both when a first-time installation requires them. Replacement on existing connections is a straight swap with no permit required. License CFC1431159.

Tampa Disposal Maintenance Schedule

  • Weekly: Run cold water for 20 seconds after the disposal finishes grinding. This flushes ground particles through the drain line before they settle in the P-trap and build a clog at the disposal’s drain connection.
  • Monthly: Drop a handful of ice cubes into the running disposal. The ice scours the grinding chamber walls and blade surfaces, removing accumulated food film without any chemical.
  • Every 6 months: Check the disposal’s drain connection under the sink for drips or moisture. The rubber drain gasket between the disposal outlet and the drain elbow is the most common slow-leak point and is easy to replace if caught early.
  • Avoid year-round: Fibrous vegetables (artichokes, celery, asparagus), fruit pits, bones, grease in quantity, pasta and rice (swell with water), and anything expandable. These are the items that cause the jams and drain clogs we clear every week.

What to Do Right Now

  1. Turn OFF disposal switch AND water.
  2. Look under disposal for Allen wrench hex hole (usually with a tiny 1/4″ Allen wrench stored nearby).
  3. Turn Allen wrench back + forth to free blades.
  4. Press red RESET button on bottom.
  5. Run water + flip switch. If still humming: motor failed.

FAQ

Can I use my hand?

NEVER. Even off, blades are sharp. Always use the Allen wrench.

Which items cause jams most?

Fibrous foods (celery, onion skins, corn husks), bones, cherry pits, coffee grounds in bulk, potato peels.

Best disposal brand?

InSinkErator or Waste King, both reliable. 1/2 HP for basic Tampa households, 3/4 HP for heavy cooking. See install guide.

How long do disposals last?

8-12 years typical. Tampa hard water + heavy use shortens.

My disposal has no Allen wrench port on the bottom. What do I do?

Some older or lower-end disposal models do not have the hex port. On those units, the only manual rotation method is using a wooden broom handle inserted from the top to try to manually move the flywheel, or using a tool called a disposal wrench that has a hook end to engage the impeller blades from above. Turn the power off completely before attempting either method, and never use your hand. If the flywheel will not move with manual force, the unit needs professional service or replacement. Licensed CFC1431159.

The disposal hums even when I am not running it. Is that normal?

No. A properly off disposal should make no sound whatsoever. A hum when the switch is off usually means power is reaching the motor even when it should not be. Check whether the switch is fully in the off position and not in an intermediate stuck position. If the unit hums with the switch clearly off, the wall switch may be faulty or there is a wiring issue. Turn off the circuit breaker and call an electrician or plumber. Do not use the disposal until that is resolved. Licensed CFC1431159.

Can a jammed garbage disposal cause the kitchen drain to back up?

Yes, indirectly. When a jammed disposal cannot grind, food particles that enter the grinding chamber sit there and begin to decompose and create a partial blockage at the drain connection. Additionally, homeowners sometimes run more water trying to force the unjammed disposal, which can push debris further into the drain line. After clearing the jam, we always run a flow test on the drain line to confirm it is clear. If the drain is slow after the jam is cleared, a drain flush at the disposal connection may be needed. Licensed CFC1431159.

Is InSinkErator or Waste King better for Tampa homes?

Both are solid brands and we install both regularly. InSinkErator models have more widespread service support and a larger parts network. The Evolution Excel series runs very quietly, which matters in open kitchen layouts. Waste King models use a permanent magnet motor with fewer internal parts and tend to be easier to manually unjam. For homes with septic systems, look for a disposal with a lower grinding volume per load to avoid overloading the septic field with organic material. We will recommend the right model based on your kitchen setup when we are on-site. Licensed CFC1431159.

After I cleared the jam, the disposal works but still makes a rattling sound. Should I be concerned?

A rattle after clearing a jam usually means a small hard object, such as a seed, pebble, or shell fragment, is still inside the grinding chamber. That object will rattle every time the disposal runs and will eventually re-jam the flywheel. Turn off the power, use tongs or a flashlight to look into the chamber from the top, and remove anything visible. If you cannot identify and remove the object, a service call to disassemble and clear the chamber is the right call before the rattle becomes another full jam. Licensed CFC1431159.
