Cheval Water Filtration: Filtering Private Well Water at 12 to 15 Grains in Lutz-Lake Fern Country
Cheval is a gated 1990s and early 2000s golf-community build where many lots pull from private wells running 12 to 15 grains of hardness with significant iron, hydrogen sulfide odor on some addresses, and TDS in the 350 to 480 ppm range. This is well chemistry, not city water, so the filtration approach is fundamentally different from Tampa or Carrollwood. We start every Cheval estimate with a full well-water test (TDS, hardness, iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, bacteria check). Halo whole-home plus softener plus iron and sulfur staging is the right Cheval approach. FREE estimates and FREE diagnosis on every visit.

Three Cheval Specifics That Change Our Water Filtration Installation
Well Water Hardness at 12 to 15 Grains: Softener Is Not Optional
Cheval well water at 12 to 15 grains is on the upper end of the very-hard range. Without softening, that water destroys water heater anode rods in 2 to 3 years (vs the 6 expected on softened water), scales tankless heat exchangers in 12 to 18 months (cutting efficiency by 25 to 35 percent), and leaves heavy chalk film on every fixture, glass, and tile surface. The Halo ION salt-based softener we install for Cheval reduces hardness to less than 1 grain at every fixture. Water heater life jumps from 6 years to 10 to 12 years, and the chalk-haze cleaning routine stops.
Softener cuts Cheval well hardness from 12 to 15 grains to less than 1 grain.
Iron and Hydrogen Sulfide Staging
Cheval well water frequently shows 0.5 to 2.0 mg/L iron (visible orange staining on porcelain, laundry yellowing) and 0.5 to 2 ppm hydrogen sulfide (the rotten-egg smell at the hot tap especially). Both need to be removed before water hits the carbon and softener stages, or they foul the media early. We install iron and sulfur oxidation pre-treatment ahead of the Halo carbon and softener, sized to your actual well test. Some Cheval addresses also need pH adjustment if the well runs acidic.

No City Disinfection: Bacteria Testing Matters
City water is chemically disinfected before it reaches your tap. Well water is not. Every Cheval well needs annual bacteria testing for coliform and E. coli, and many homeowners benefit from a UV disinfection stage downstream of the carbon and softener. We include a baseline bacteria test at every Cheval estimate and recommend UV (about $750 to $1,100 extra) where the test or homeowner risk profile justifies. Manufacturer warranty on the UV lamp is 1 year, with bulb replacement annually.

Well Water and PFAS: Cheval-Specific Considerations
EPA's April 2024 PFAS rule covers public water utilities and does not directly regulate private wells. However, Cheval wells pull from the Floridan aquifer, which has documented trace PFAS in some monitoring zones across north Hillsborough County. There is no automatic utility upgrade coming for your well because there is no utility. Cheval homeowners who want PFAS certainty install Rheem RO at the kitchen sink (NSF/ANSI 53 and 58 certified) for drinking and cooking water. Whole-home PFAS treatment on a private well requires specialized resin and is much more expensive (typically $4,500-plus for media alone). For most Cheval homes, RO at the kitchen is the practical solution.
