AC Running Constantly in Tampa?

Here is the honest first answer: in the peak of a Tampa summer, when it is 95 degrees with brutal humidity, your AC running almost nonstop is normal and correct. The system is sized to keep up on a design day by running continuously, and a unit that cycles off frequently in July is often the one that cannot pull humidity. The real warning sign is when the AC runs constantly AND cannot reach your setpoint, or when it runs nonstop in mild weather (78 to 85 degrees) when it should be cycling. Here are the causes we find, ranked by frequency.

1. Dirty air filter or coil. The most common fixable cause. A clogged filter or a dirty evaporator or condenser coil chokes airflow and heat transfer, so the system runs and runs without satisfying the thermostat. Tampa pollen and humidity load filters and coils fast.
2. Low refrigerant from a leak. A system low on R-410A or R-454B loses cooling capacity and runs continuously trying to catch up, often with ice on the line set.
3. Leaky or undersized ductwork. Cooled air leaking into a hot Tampa attic before it reaches the rooms means the system never wins. Very common in homes built in the 1990s and 2000s.
4. Aging system losing capacity. A 12-plus-year-old unit with a tired compressor simply cannot move the heat it once did.
5. Thermostat fan set to ON instead of AUTO. If the fan runs constantly, people think the whole system is running constantly. Switching to AUTO fixes the perception and improves humidity removal.
6. Undersized system or poor insulation. A unit too small for the load, or a house leaking heat through bad seals and insufficient attic insulation, runs nonstop on hot days.
7. Dirty condenser or failing capacitor. A debris-packed outdoor coil or a weak capacitor makes the system work harder and longer.

What you pay depends on the actual cause. Here is where Tampa Bay pricing typically lands in 2026, with FREE diagnosis on every call.

• Filter and coil cleaning: $295 to $495 for a full coil cleaning, indoor or outdoor.
• Capacitor replacement: $279 to $425 installed.
• Refrigerant leak repair: $1,179 for a copper leak (line flush and new filter drier included), plus the refrigerant.
• Duct sealing or repair: quoted after a FREE inspection; a failing duct run is replaced at $639 per drop (R-6 flex).
• Right-sized AC replacement when the unit is undersized or aged out: $7,141 to $19,931 for a properly sized Goodman or Daikin system, including an ACCA Manual J load calculation so it is matched to your home, not oversized or undersized.
• Variable-speed upgrade: ramps output to match the load and runs longer at low speed by design, which is efficient and pulls humidity better in our climate.
