How to Install a Honeywell T4 Thermostat (Step by Step From a Tampa HVAC Pro)

The Honeywell T4 Pro is a reliable, budget friendly programmable thermostat that a lot of Tampa homeowners choose when they want simple control without the smart home extras. In this guide our tech installs one step by step. Watch the full video, then follow along below.

Before you start

You need a small screwdriver, a phone for photos, and about 30 minutes. The T4 can run off batteries, but if your system has a C (common) wire, use it, wiring it in gives you steady power and avoids dead battery surprises during a heat wave.

Step by step

1. Shut off power at the breaker

Turn off the breaker feeding your air handler before you pull anything apart. Safety first, and it protects the control board.

2. Remove the old thermostat and label the wires

Take a photo of the existing wiring first. On the T4 style base, wires release by pressing the terminal tab and sliding the wire out. Pull them one at a time and keep the insulation intact.

3. Mount the T4 base

Level the new base against the wall, mark the holes, and feed the wires through. Anchor it so it sits flush.

4. Land each wire on its terminal

Match your labeled wires to the T4 terminals (R, C, W, Y, G and so on). If you have a C wire, land it on C for continuous power.

5. Attach the face, restore power, and set it up

Clip the T4 onto the base, flip the breaker back on, and follow the on screen prompts to set the date, time, and your schedule.

Common mistakes to avoid

Leaving the C wire capped off when you have one, mixing up the Y and G terminals, and skipping the photo so you cannot remember the original wiring. Slow down on those three and this is an easy job.
